Is Frequent Urination at Night a Normal Part of Ageing or a Prostate Problem?

Frequent Urination at Night

Are you waking up multiple times to go to the bathroom and wonder if it’s just your age catching up to you? The truth is it can be either and you can usually tell by the pattern of your symptoms which it is.

What Aging Really Does

As we get older, the bladder can hold a little less, and the body’s night-time hormone to slow urine production weakens. So, it’s quite common to go to the toilet once after midnight and it’s usually nothing to worry about. The trouble starts when you wake up two or three times during the nite, have trouble falling back to sleep, or feel tired during the day.

When the prostate is likely the cause

In men, the prostate surrounds the passage of urine. It narrows the channel as it grows and the bladder is always a bit full after each visit. That’s why it recharges quickly and wakes you up again. If you also have: a prostate cause is more likely

  • A slow or weak flow
  • Waiting for the piss to start
  • Stopping and starting or straining
  • A feeling that the bladder is not emptying completely
  • Also, urination is often during the day.

Other causes to exclude

Not all cases are of the prostate. Diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure medicines, swollen ankles and a late evening brew of tea, coffee or alcohol can all increase night-time urine. This is why a good check-up is more important than guessing.

Habits to adopt

By early evening, drink most of your fluids. Don’t drink caffeine after lunch, and empty your bladder just before you go to bed. These steps are free and sometimes bring real relief.

 Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Ignoring a prostate problem could end in infections, bladder stones or sudden inability to urinate. Sleep disturbances also increase the risk for falls at nite in older adults.

A qualified urologist in Indore will examine you and order simple tests such as urine analysis, ultrasound and PSA blood test and identify the real cause. If the enlarged prostate is diagnosed, a prostate specialist in Indore can help guide you to the right approach to treatment, which often begins with medicines and not surgery.

Waking up during the nite doesn’t have to be the new normal. One consultation can give you answers and a full night’s sleep.
